UNIONE SPORTIVA ITALIANA in New York City – 1930

by maria settanni
December 14th, 2014

Colleague-
My grandfather William Whitman, Sr. was a huge fan of Italian bicycle racing, and filmed home movies of UNIONE SPORTIVA ITALIANA in New York City on 1930. I think our home movies would be of great interest to many of your members, as well as to people with relatives in these movies. You can at:

http://youtu.be/54V9kzwqefs

Do you have a way to widely share this link, or to connect with people who would have known the individuals in these movies? I look forward to hearing from you.
David W. Haas, MD

Side note: Please contact USI if you recognize anyone in the film. Let us know which frame (time) and where the person is located  in the frame as Dr. Haas will add these names to the film.

#1 Truest Fan of the Gimbels Ride

by maria settanni
December 13th, 2014

Dear John,

Barb D. gave me your e-mail. You don’t know me and I don’t know you. But we may have taken notice when you rode by Old Kensico Road and I was out there cheering the bikers with Ms Mildred.

I enclose for you a couple of pictures of your truest fan that I took on the Nov. 22/23 weekend when I was visiting.

Please know that “cheering the bikers” has been a No 1 topic for years, as have your kind attentions and flowers given joy.

My connection with the family is this: I was welcomed into the family 44 years ago as a 16 year old high school student from Germany spending a year on the AFS Cultural exchange program. The experience has truly shaped my life. We have loved each other and stayed close ever since.

On a side line. Your bike club may want to check out the “Hamburg Cyclassics”. It is one of the most prestigious bike races for non-pros in Europe with a 55 km and a 100 km course. Hamburg is my home town. In case any of you make it over here, I’d be happy to help along.

Regards

Emi von H.
